1. Our global position, your strategic advantage.
The port of Rijeka is the nearest port for the transportation of goods across the Middle East and Far East maritime routes. The port of Rijeka is the closest port for the transport of goods from the direction of Suez towards Central Europe.
2. The central position where the Mediterranean and Central Europe meet.
Rijeka is situated at a distance of just five hundred kilometres by the highway from many European capitals. Milan, Munich, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, only a couple of hours drive away. Zagreb, Ljubljana and Trieste are here, in the neighbourhood. Not many regions are located in such a focus, at the junction of the Mediterranean, Central Europe and Eastern Europe. Our region is truly a hot spot!
3. The traditional cradle of innovations.
Our industrial tradition remains even today the source of new ideas, as evident by the proportion of innovation from our region in the Croatian innovations in total. The world's first torpedo was developed in Rijeka. It was designed and compiled by John Luppis, a sea captain, and Robert Whitehead, an English investor. In Rijeka, for the first time in history, the flight of a rifle grain was photographed; the iodine tincture for operations first applied.
In former Yugoslavia, Rijeka has hosted the largest national Innovation Fair - RastYu. This glorious tradition is continued by Rijeka Science and Technology Park Step-Ri.
4. Openness and multiculturalism.
For historical reasons as well as the rich history of tourism in the region (almost 170 years of continuous tradition), the inhabitants of the region have been very open to foreigners.
People are accustomed to regularly using their knowledge of foreign languages and open to intercultural dialogue. In Rijeka, the centre of the region, there are as much as 23 national minority organizations and communities. For us, no one is a stranger!
5. Climate and environment.
The region represents a unique blend of the Mediterranean and continental climate. Not many micro regions of Europe can boast with islands and sea rivieras, as well as mountain nature parks and ski resorts, all within an hour's drive!
